More shopping

I went out at lunch and got the matching white switches and cover for the bathroom to install the vent fan switch. This will let the fan run after we leave for a fixed amount of time.

Sunday, finally got more done

More Wally's and removed more plaster

This is the wall where the closet is going to go I filled in all of the patches except the bottom where I decided the plaster was too loose and now I have to do the matching corner.

I think it can come out pretty well and this will be the first wall I will put a finish coat on as it will be hid by the closet. It has been 20 years since I have put on a final cost of plaster.

Windows wall
Worked the corner and tried a paper baked metal corner as the condition was not good but i thought the metal corner too think. So far it looks pretty sharp. It feels weird using drywall supplies with plaster but if you can't tell I'm mostly making this up as I go along.

I also touched up the rest of this wall as this will be the next wall finished as I need the height of the plaster to finish the trim for the walls.

Where the real action is

Decided what to do with the heat register. I have removed the plaster from above and below as I don't think the keying was working and there isn't much to attach the register to so I'll start from new. You can see the fine cover I am using for now.

The outlet box is terminal frustration. I thought I had it sized right but it was the old metal box size. I had closed up the opening to make a nice fit. It was too small and I had to reopen it and remove some of the metal lathe I had installed making the opening too big. So I got to make it smaller again. The other problem is the room is on one circuit so there is no lighting to move the wires into the box. I can't close the wall until the wires are in the right place.

I also had some left over base plaster so I started to close up the wall by the door. I need to rebuild the wood lathe to support the metal lathe for the base coat. Got more stabilization of side wall done.

More shopping

Got a new bulb shade for the hall light fixture. Tall enough to hold a big compact fluorescent to try to light up the stairs. I really have to add another fixture to light up the stairs. Shopped the ACE sales and got this and some General Finishes Oil and varnish I wanted to try for half off.

More Wally's

Just got more Wally's on. Maybe I can see the end of the base coat soon.

I also emptied the shop vacuum and carried out the heavy bag of plaster and scrap. Don't wait so long to empty waste plaster from the garbage it is really hard to get it down the stairs. The floor is almost presentable.

Busy Sunday

Installed new switches in the hallway
You can see the washers for the Wally Plaster repair it did a good job of stabilizing the lathe while I widened the switch from the old single 3-way switch to the new twin switch arrangement. These are for the light and fan in the hallway and stairs. The primer marked the paint a bit despite washing immediately. I also realized I don't have any light almond double switch covers. This also allowed me to pull the wires from the room baby's room.

Installed new mesh by the doorway

You can see the mesh along the inside of the door the whole line of the plaster has been stabilized by the Wally repair. I still have to figure out how to deal with the old stove pipe opening. You can also see the damp spots here the wall paper is being removed.

I also stripped and prepared the opening on this wall to be finished off by more Wally's. You can also see that the clamps from the treatments today. I need more clamps as I have to wait before I can glue more. You can see a previous one to the right. This plaster is too thin I will need to thicken them to make them more like normal plaster and lathe.

Other tasks
New sticker on the car - The governor taking more money
Moved a bunch wood chips - around the trees
Mowed and put stabil in the lawnmower - most of thee leaves are gone
Put stakes on the driveway for Jack to plow by

Saturday Progress

Removed wallpaper
Tried the Fein scraper to remove the wallpaper I is really good with the 1950 wallpaper but is not good for the paper attached with older methods. The DIF gel seems to work well even on the 120 year old wallpaper.

Prepped wall
Found some lathe out in the garage. Filled the hole next the heat duct with foam. I believe it was open for the older heating system. I still need to trim the plaster to install the electrical box. The lathe will be needed to support the wire mesh all the way across the opening. This is the main feed for the South wall.

2009-11-17 Accomplishments

Worked on installing more Wally's plastermagic. Just a few notes:
1. The stuff is amazing it has saved me hours on the first wall I stabilized
2. There are not enough clamps and screws in the contrator pack
3. It really takes 2 day to fully harded

I started stabilizing the entry wall and may have to give up and just pull down the plaster as there seems to be too much gap. I'll know more once I remove the clamps today. The other advantage to that is the wallpaper is not removed yet so it might speed the process up. However, the loose lathe by the outlet box reall seems to have stabilized. The durabond seems to have done a good job reshaping the box and I should trim it tonight.

Still debating a new Sears NEXTEC Multitool as I am still in shock about Fein part prices. The cutting of plaser and lathe really does them in. I just worry it will be too wimpy to function.

Log Start

Alan will attempt to log his woodworking. I just got the finish on the 2 windows in the new baby's room. It turns out this room may be in the worst condition of all of them in the house.

You can see the mess that accompanies the construction.  You can also see where I have filled in below new windows where the old tall windows were. It was my first experience using the StructoLite product and wire mesh and wire mesh over wood lathe. I seems to have worked and will write more as I apply the top coat.
